Mumbai/Bhubaneswar, June 25, 2025 – Former Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik is currently recuperating in Mumbai after undergoing a successful surgery to address a long-standing health issue.
The 78-year-old politician, who served as Odisha Chief Minister for a historic 24 years, was experiencing discomfort due to cervical arthritis, a degenerative condition affecting the neck and upper spine. After several months of physiotherapy and conservative treatment, doctors advised a surgical procedure for long-term relief and mobility.
On June 20, 2025, Naveen Patnaik left Bhubaneswar for Mumbai and was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. The surgery was performed on June 22 under the supervision of renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Ramakanta Panda, who has been serving as Patnaik’s personal physician for several years.
Sources close to the family confirmed that the surgery went smoothly and Naveen’s condition is stable, responding well to post-operative care. He is conscious, comfortable and undergoing routine rehabilitation procedures as advised by his medical team, his brother Prem Patnaik said.
Despite being away from Odisha, Naveen Patnaik continues to be at the centre of political attention. Senior BJD leaders have taken charge of party affairs in his temporary absence, with the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) ensuring coordination on both organisational and legislative matters. Many party members and well-wishers gather at his Bhubaneswar residence daily to pray for his recovery and extend messages of support.
Naveen is expected to be discharged in early July, after which he will return to Odisha and resume active participation in public life, albeit gradually depending on his recovery.
The people of Odisha – from rural voters to political analysts – keep a close eye on his health updates, a testament to his deep association with the state for over two decades. Though Naveen Patnaik is currently not in office, he remains one of India’s most respected and influential political figures.
While he is resting and recuperating, one thing is clear: Naveen Patnaik’s legacy, like his perseverance, continues to inspire.
